5 Day Airbrush Workshop with Sheri Hoeger, The Mad Stencilist

StudioThis incredibly versatile tool can be an asset in every decorative artist's toolbox. This workshop will begin with basic operation, 'care and feeding', necessary equipment and setting up your workspace. As the workshop progresses we will explore stenciling with airbrush, shading for dimension and blending and layering colors to build a dynamic and balanced composition. We will also cover stacking stencils and the use of various materials for masking while creating a trompe l'oeil scene. All stencils provided to students are theirs to keep. Iwata Airbrushes and equipment for workshop supplied by Medea/Artool.

Day 1: Basic care and operation. We will learn how the airbrushLeafy Potpourri works and understand the tool by disassembling and reassembling, discussing equipment, and getting the feel of the various spray patterns. We will stencil the 302 Leafy Potpourri, which will incorporate wide and narrow spray patterns, while providing many color opportunities. We will practice blending three colors to create a full pallet.

Day 2: Shading and Blending Color - We will discuss value and chroma and their effects on composition, both in a room context and within an arrangement. We will stencil the 701 Floral Arch first in a monochromatic tone to create a value study and then in 4 colors.

•Day 3 Students will create a trompe l’oeil niche by stacking stencils, combining marbling and learning free-hand airbrushed cast shadows. We will approach color differently, building on skills learned earlier, giving the finished mural a faded, old world feel, resembling a hand tinted sepia photograph.
• Day 4 Clouds are a favorite element for mural painting, and nothing renders them quite like the airbrush! We will learn several different types and sizes. In addtions sudents will learn this fast and easy technique for painting beautiful trees. We will use glaze to roll the bark texture, then combine our new airbrush skills to shade the contours and layer random leaves.
