The first step (not shown) is to trowel two light coats of Proceed Rough Irregular right out of the bucket. Color worked for us as is, and has that gritty feel for the grout. Then we taped off our stone shapes. We tore the tape first so there would be only irregular edges. We mixed Rough Regular texture with different colors of the slow-dry acrylics. There is a little Raw Umber in everything. We also used Raw Sienna, Yellow Oxide, Chromium Oxide Green, Cerulean Blue, and Red Oxide |
We added some of Golden's gels here and there. Pumice gel in the green stones, garnet gel in the bigger yellowish one (streaks of red are the garnet gel) and coarse mica flakes in the large lower left stone. |
With this layer, we skipped the trowel for more texture and embedded the gels so they would look natural. |

We put in some airbrushed shadows, using raw umber-the common color that is in the mix of everything. This can be done with a brush, using the slow drying acrylics diluted with low viscosity glaze. |
We felt the airbrushed shadows alone were not enough, so painted in more along with some more texture skipping, painted highlights and more color with the Slow-dry acrylics diluted with low viscosity glaze. |
